Make Time for You

Image
Make Time for You A vast majority of people are guilty of making New Year’s Eve resolutions. We decide to commit to losing weight, read more, spend less time on social media, quit smoking, or drink less. Making these lifestyle changes are well and good, but a large percentage of those who make them struggle to stick with it. You may ask yourself, “How many times can I try to…?” The truth is, as many times as it takes. There is no doubt that these committed changes or goals take determination and not everyone gets it right the first time around. I’ve heard that it takes 21 days to form a habit, but recent studies showed that it actually takes about 66 days. It’s never too late to make a change, whether if it’s a New Year’s resolution or you wake up Thursday morning and decide to start riding your bike to work. Having a goal that will make a positive impact on your life is worth it. It’s not impossible to be the person you want to be, to form positive habits or take time for you, s...

Dangers of Dating Apps

Image
Dangers of Dating Apps Before, we talked about scary apps parents should watch out for in protecting their children. This time we're going to bring up the cautions of dating apps for adults. You hear it all the time. Some horror story about someone meeting a stranger on a dating app and “hitting it off.” Only to come to the realization that that person is not who they say they are or they managed to con the other person in some aspect. That was the situation for 30 women who were conned through a dating app. In New Jersey, a man managed to scam these women out of over $2 million. Rubbin Sarpong and a few other accomplices set up fake online dating accounts and pretended to strike up a romantic relationship with random ladies. Sarpong went as far as telling these ladies he was military personnel stationed in Syria and was awarded gold bars that needed to be shipped to the United States. He reportedly told the women the fictitious gold bars were worth $12 million and needed h...

Keep Your Eyes Open

Image
Keep Your Eyes Open In May, a Ft. Worth man was arrested and faced charges of aggravated kidnapping and aggravated sexual assault of a child. The girl managed to get away and seek help from a couple of Kentucky Fried Chicken employees. The girl met her kidnapper, 24-year-old Diamond Marquis Williams, on Snapchat. This is the third recent arrest in the North Texas area involving the Snapchat app and allegations of aggravated sexual assault of a child. The Snapchat app allows the user to take a photo or video. You make the photo or video available for a specific amount of time. After that time limit is up, the photo or video automatically disappears. Users can even share their location with other users and people they don’t know. This can be a scary app for parents. Kids can receive or send inappropriate photos. It popular with kids because they feel they can send immoral photos without consequences because the image will disappear. What they don’t realize is that nothing sent over...

CPR: A Lifesaving Technique It’s no secret that knowing the proper technique of CPR can save a life. It is used when someone's breathing or heartbeat has stopped, like during a heart attack or drowning. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, CPR, purpose is to help restore partial flow of oxygenated blood to the brain and heart in order to delay tissue death. It’s important to remember that every second counts and even though you lack some knowledge of CPR, there are ways to help like “hands-only” CPR. That means uninterrupted chest compressions of 100 to 120 a minute and you don't need to try rescue breathing. If you're well-tra...

The Importance of Self-Care

Image
The Importance of Self-Care Call it what you will, "me-time” or “self-care,” it’s safe to say that we could all benefit from it. The time you take for your self is essential to your health, and most of us don’t do it enough. It’s easy to get sidetracked, there is always something else that needs to get done, or we fulfill someone else needs. But when we think of ‘me-time,’ we associate it with spending money in some form. A trip to the salon, spa day, nail salon, or lunch with girlfriends. I’ll be the first o admit that I love getting a manicure, but there are times when I don’t have the funds to get one. So, sometimes, that means no me-time. It’s important to remember that you don’t have to spend money to recharge. As a mom, I feel that taking time to relax and recharge makes me a more present (pleasant) parent.
