CPR: A Lifesaving Technique

CPR: A Lifesaving Technique

It’s no secret that knowing the proper technique of CPR can save a life. It is used when someone's breathing or heartbeat has stopped, like during a heart attack or drowning. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, CPR, purpose is to help restore partial flow of oxygenated blood to the brain and heart in order to delay tissue death. It’s important to remember that every second counts and even though you lack some knowledge of CPR, there are ways to help like “hands-only” CPR. This is only recommended to be used on teens or adults and not on children. This method uses chest compressions to help keep blood circulating until emergency help arrives.

Here is some advice from the American Heart Association that will be helpful in saving a life:

  • If you're not trained in CPR, then provide “hands-only: CPR mentioned above. That means uninterrupted chest compressions of 100 to 120 a minute and you don't need to try rescue breathing.
  • If you're well-trained and confident in your ability, check to see if there is a pulse and breathing. If there is no breathing or a pulse within 10 seconds, begin chest compressions. Start CPR with 30 chest compressions before giving two rescue breaths.
  •  If you've previously received CPR training but you're not confident in your abilities, then just do chest compressions at a rate of 100 to 120 a minute.

The above advice applies to adults, children, and infants needing CPR, but not newborns (infants up to 4 weeks old). To be safe, keep your skills up to date and refresh your training every two years. To learn more, visit www.mayoclinic.org.
