First off, the idea of a family is very subjective. The typical idea is that of a couple parents and a couple or more children. However, a family can be more than just the aforementioned notion. If you are raising children or you are expecting your first child, then you are already a family. To me, my family was just my mom and my adopted sister. Since my dad had passed before I got a chance to know him, my mom had her work cut out for her just like so many other women in similar situations. We did not grow up in an area like the Big Country. Far from it, actually. 

We grew up in the metroplex area and we hardly knew any of our neighbors. We never did get to know any of them because we didn't really stay in the same place for very long. My mom will testify that I was an extremely gregarious young kid and that if I had an opportunity to talk to someone, I probably would take it. I would tell them about whatever my latest Lego creation was since that was one of the few toys I had while growing up. Needless to say, it was a struggle for my mother. Only now, as an adult, do I realize how much effort my mom put into raising us.

Never once in my younger years did I think I was missing out on much. It wasn't until I got older that I could see how other kids were raised. But, as they say, comparison is the thief of joy. Even if I didn't have much compared to others, I know that I had everything I needed and it could have been much worse for me. I am so grateful to my mom for all her hard work. Another thing I am extremely happy about is The Open Door and all its programs to help families. These services they offer are free to mothers and parents who could use a little help. 

For expecting mothers, they offer all kinds of free pregnancy services like options counseling, limited ultrasounds, pregnancy tests, and more. Families with babies, toddlers, and younger children have access to free monthly childcare products like diapers, clothes, formula, baby food, wipes, and much more. In addition to all that, they offer weekly meetings for mothers and fathers so that you can meet new people and discuss the joys and pains involved in raising children. The Open Door offers so much more, too.
