Working Towards Getting Your GED

The General Education Development, or GED, test is an option offered to adults who were either unwilling or unable to complete high school in the traditional way. The tests are a group of four subject tests and, when passed, provide certification that the person has high school level academic skills. It measures the skills and knowledge similar to a four-year high school program. Since 1942, the General Educational Development has changed millions of lives for the better.

How It Began

The GED was developed in 1942 to help WWII veterans who were sent overseas to fight the war before they could finish their high school education. The United States Armed Forces Institute asked the American Council on Education (ACE) to develop a battery of tests. Passing these tests gave returning soldiers and sailors the academic credentials they needed to get civilian jobs and gain access to post-secondary education or training. The test has gone through a few revisions, with the most recent one in 2014, which brought the five subject test down to four: Math, Science, Language Arts, and Social Studies.

Why It's Important

According to the GED Testing Service, 97 percent of U.S. employers, colleges, and universities recognize and accept GED credentials. Please note that some colleges require the ACT and/or SAT, as well as additional placement or achievement tests. Having your GED will help you get and keep a job. You become more valuable to employers, and they would rather hire someone they feel has the necessary skills to pass the GED. Not only that, but research shows that people with a high school-level credential make an average of $385,000 more in their lifetime than people who don't have a diploma. Passing the GED can also build self-confidence and help you reach your goals or work towards improving your future. Your family can benefit not only financially but by encouraging your child/children to seek educational opportunities and complete educational milestones.
