Diapers
Diapers
Most would think the concept of diapers, both cloth and disposable, is the best thing ever. The bee's knees. They protect your baby’s bum and are strong enough to hold things where they are supposed to. But how much do you really know about diapers? Did you know they weren’t always like this? Cloth diapers were a “thing” and during the last century, they were the best way to handle babies messes. Disposable diapers weren’t available until the 40s, which were a luxury only a few could afford.A Bit of History
There are historical documents that suggest parents used some form of the diaper during ancient times. Animal skins, moss, leaves, linens, or milkweed leaf are some of the materials used. During the Elizabethan times, some sort of cloth diaper was used but was rarely changed so children wore soiled diapers for days before being washed. During ancient times, Innuits placed moss under sealskin, Native Americans packed grass under diaper covers made of rabbit skin, and people in warmer climate let their babies roam naked. It wasn't till several hundred years later that the cloth diaper began improving and the term diaper began being used.During the 20th-century diaper service companies played a big part during World War II. Fresh cotton diapers would be delivered on an as-needed basis so that mothers were not letting their babies sit in soiled diapers for long periods of time.
Development
The first disposable was created in Sweden in 1942. It was basically a cloth pad with a pair of rubber pants over it. It was made from creped cellulose material because cotton was hard to come by and any cotton scrap was donated to help the war effort. And over the year's many types of diapers were developed. It wasn’t until the 60s that the disposable diaper evolved and gone through improvements. The early 90s became a time for the cloth diaper to reemerge with more people being environmentally concerned. Many developments have made it easier for parents to buy cloth or disposable diapers that meet their needs. Several cloth diaper companies came out, there are more organic options when it comes to disposables, and it’s more socially acceptable to wrap your baby in cloth diapers.
